Pure Bliss

December 5

Day 9

Listen to the Song: Hark the Herald Angels Sing

What does it mean to bring glory? That is what the angels did, but…what does that mean? Glory is a multifaceted word that has many meanings to our one English word. It will appear in songs many times…and we will keep learning more over Advent…but for now consider:

Glory in the Old Testament has the simple meaning of heaviness or weight…and was used as a measure of a persons worth, honor, importance, power, etc. The angels exclaim the weight of the new born king…the bliss of heaven. I love the idea of Jesus being the “Bliss of Heaven” which can also be derived from the word Glory.

The angels invite all who will hear to feel the weight and heaviness of what has happened…pure bliss has arrived.

The angels first say…don’t be afraid. Why? Pure bliss has arrived! How does this understanding of Glory shift your thinking? If the bliss of heaven is has come to earth how might you give glory to God today?

Activity for Kids:

Pick-up something heavy. Did you know that the Glory of Jesus is so great, the Bible uses a word that means “heavy” to describe Jesus’ Glory? List some of the great things about Jesus and pile up a book for everything on the list. Now try to pick up the pile. When we find heavy things this advent, let’s remember the Glory of Jesus.

Move the angels to the next note.

Hark! The herald angels sing "Glory to the new-born king Peace on earth and mercy mild God and sinners reconciled" Joyful all ye nations rise Join the triumph of the skies With angelic host proclaim "Christ is born in Bethlehem" Hark! The herald angels sing "Glory to the new-born king"

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail the Sun of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings Risen with healing in His wings Mild He lays His glory by Born that man no more may die Born to raise the sons of earth Born to give them second birth Hark! The herald angels sing "Glory to the new-born king"

Hark! The herald angels sing "Glory to the new-born king Peace on earth and mercy mild God and sinners reconciled" Joyful all ye nations rise Join the triumph of the skies With angelic host proclaim "Christ is born in Bethlehem" Hark! The herald angels sing "Glory to the new-born king" "Glory to the new-born king"
