What is Service Over Self?

In 1986, Christ United Methodist Church in Memphis launched SOS as a means to meet needs of some of the city’s most vulnerable homeowners.

Since then, SOS has repaired more than 900 homes in the inner-city of Memphis with more than 24,000 volunteers.

Today, SOS operates as its own independent 501(c)3 non-profit Christian organization. Their strategy is to focus on specific neighborhoods and to partner with low-income homeowners.

Why we help Service Over Self

Through SOS, Huron River Methodist Church provides the opportunity for kids to expand their comfort zone and serve somewhere different from where they live. Participating in SOS allows the youth to experience and share the love of Christ in new ways. We also like to partner with a mission to serve another community and spread the love of Christ, which also glorifies God as we serve those who are marginalized in our society.

What you need to know

This trip is open to all incoming 9th graders to graduating seniors. Participants must sign up in advance because the trip does fill up. This is a work project service trip. The majority of the work is outdoors and includes mostly roof repair. SOS can make accommodations for those unable to work on the roofs. It costs between $350-$375 per student to participate. Scholarships are available.
