Room in our Hearts

December 8

Day 12

Listen to “Thou Didst Leave Thy Throne”

This old hymn shares the story of Jesus the Christ from Advent to Advent. It is easy to think that there is only one Advent (which means coming) but the Bible speaks about two Advents…the first coming of Jesus to earth as a baby and the return of Jesus as King to take his people home to heaven. These two advents are inextricably linked. The first advent makes the second one possible, and the second advent flows from the work of the first advent. The angels rejoice and announce both advents. They seem to show up and make a big noise to make sure we don’t miss these wonderful arrivals of Jesus.

This song calls us to make room in our hearts for Jesus. Yesterday we remembered that Christmas angels sing all around us, let this listening lead us to make space for Jesus in our hearts and homes.

Activity for Kids:

Set a place for Jesus at the dinner table to remember that the Jesus who came as a baby will come again and we want to make room, a place for him every day in our lives.

Thou didst leave Thy Throne

By E.S. Elliot

1 Thou didst leave Thy throne and Thy kingly crown, When Thou camest to earth for me; But in Bethlehem's home was there found no room For Thy holy nativity. O come to my heart, Lord Jesus, There is room in my heart for Thee.

2 Heaven's arches rang when the angels sang, Proclaiming Thy royal degree; But of lowly birth didst Thou come to earth, And in great humility. O come to my heart, Lord Jesus, There is room in my heart for Thee.

3 The foxes found rest, and the birds their nest In the shade of the forest tree; But Thy couch was the sod, O Thou Son of God, In the deserts of Galilee. O come to my heart, Lord Jesus, There is room in my heart for Thee.

4 Thou camest, O Lord, with the living word That should set Thy people free; But with mocking scorn, and with crown of thorn, They bore Thee to Calvary. O come to my heart, Lord Jesus, There is room in my heart for Thee.

5 When the heavens shall ring, and the angels sing, At Thy coming to victory, Let Thy voice call me home, saying "Yet there is room, There is room at My side for thee." My heart shall rejoice, Lord Jesus, When Thou comest and callest for me.
