40 Days of Lent Family Devotions: Day 40

April 8, 2023

Face to Face with the Easter Story Event downtown Dexter 1-3 p.m. Hear the story of Easter through the eyes of animals. Pet the animals as you remember the story.

Young Children and Early Elementary

Day 40

READ: The sun stops shining: The crucifixion, from Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, John 19, p.302-309.

ORNAMENT IDEA: Hang a cross on the tree.

This ornament reminds us that Jesus died on a cross to rescue me.

ACTIVITY: Take a dark blanket, sheet, etc. and cover the Easter tree. This reminds us that Jesus is dead and in the tomb.

For younger children go ahead and read the next story of the resurrection. It is too overwhelming for younger children and maybe older children to hear about the death of Jesus without the resurrection. For older children who remember the resurrection you might want to wait for that story till Easter.

PREPRATION for EASTER MORNING: After your children are asleep, remove the dark covering on the tree and decorate it with symbols of life. Flowers, butterflies, bright ribbon, etc. and empty Easter eggs to remember the empty tomb.

There is a post for Easter even though our 40 days of waiting are done, it will go up Saturday evening for you to take a look before Sunday if you wish.

Older Elementary

Day 40

READ: p.627-640, “On Trial”, “Death Sentence”, & “Crucified!”

ORNAMENT: A Cross. This ornament reminds us that Jesus died on a cross to rescue me.

ACTIVITY: Take a dark blanket, sheet, etc. and cover the Easter tree. This reminds us that Jesus is dead and in the tomb.

For many children it is overwhelming to hear about the death of Jesus without the resurrection. Read ahead, or remember what happens next.
