Your Calendar Tells Your Story: Finding Peace in God's Rhythm

ree

What if the most important document in your life isn't your diploma, driver's license, or bank statement? What if it's actually your calendar? Your calendar tells your story without asking permission - it reveals where your time went, what you valued, and what truly governs your life.

Why Your Calendar Matters More Than You Think

We often think calendars are about the future - upcoming appointments, events, and commitments. But calendars actually show us the past through the commitments we make for future dates. They reveal traditions, relationships, and priorities that shape us as we move forward.

Your calendar may be too full, too empty, or filled with things that don't align with your heart's values. Regardless, it exposes what you actually prioritize in life.

God Invented Sacred Time

Calendars were God's idea. Before Genesis reaches its second chapter, God creates sacred time by blessing the seventh day and making it holy. This is the first thing God calls holy - not a place or object, but time itself.

Throughout the Old Testament, God built Israel's entire calendar around what He had done for them. The Passover, festivals, and holy days all centered on remembering God's story of deliverance from slavery in Egypt.

Which Calendar Is Running Your Life?

The real question isn't whether you have a calendar, but which calendar governs your time. Is it your children's sports schedule? Your work demands? School obligations? Holiday chaos? Or is it God's calendar that tells you who you are and whose story you're part of?

Our secular calendar is filled with Roman gods and rulers - January (Janus), March (Mars), July (Julius Caesar), August (Ceasar Augustus). But time actually pivots around Jesus Christ. BC means "Before Christ" and AD means "in the year of our Lord." When you check today's date, you're measuring time from the birth of Christ.

Advent: God's Great Reset Button

Advent marks the beginning of the Christian calendar year. It's not just about purple candles and chocolate calendars - it's about walking through the life of Christ. Advent literally means "toward coming," pulling us into the reality of Jesus' first coming to Bethlehem and His second coming when time gives way to eternity.

Why We Need a Reset

Every year, every day, God offers us a fresh start. Lamentations tells us His mercies are new every morning. We desperately need this reset in our calendars, habits, phone usage, marriages, friendships, attitudes, and choices.

The Story of Three Servants

Isaiah reveals three servants in God's plan:

Servant 1: Adam (The Failed Image-Bearer)

Adam and Eve were created in God's image with infinite value, called to follow God. But they chose self-rule, and everything fractured. The first servant failed.

Servant 2: Israel (The Wandering Nation)

Israel was called to be God's servant, a light to the nations. Instead, they worshiped idols and carried dead weight rather than God's glory. The problem wasn't just external idols - it was the idolatry in their hearts.

Servant 3: Jesus (The Perfect Servant)

Isaiah prophesied about a mysterious servant who would carry our griefs and bear our sins. This servant is Jesus - the Adam who never failed, the Israel who never wandered. He's the rebirther, creating a new tribe of witnesses.

Jesus: The Prince of Peace

Isaiah prophesied: "For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us, and the government will rest on His shoulders. His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace."

Peace isn't the absence of conflict - peace is a person. Jesus brings:

  • Peace with God: Your sins are forgiven, your shame is disarmed

  • Peace within yourself: Healing for your fractured, anxious soul

  • Peace with others: Freedom from bitterness and grudges

  • Peace in the world: Jesus is King, making a difference globally

The Sabbatical Year: God's Pattern for Peace

Jesus proclaimed "the year of the Lord's favor," referring to the sabbatical year that occurred every seven years in Israel. This wasn't vacation - it was God showing what peace looks like when He runs the calendar.

Five Elements of God's Peace Calendar

  1. Rest the Land Your peace grows in trust. Stop treating exhaustion like a badge of honor. True peace grows when you trust God with your schedule and productivity.

  2. Debt Cancellation Peace comes when we let go. This includes financial debts but also grudges, offenses, and emotional ledgers we keep. Peace blooms when forgiveness flows.

  3. Release of Servants Peace restores dignity. People are freed from shame and supported rather than criticized. No one stays stuck because God's people lift each other up.

  4. Generosity to the Poor Peace flows from open hands. Peace can't flourish with clenched fists but multiplies when hearts are soft and hands are open.

  5. Reading of Scripture Peace grows when God's story becomes your story. It's not found in news cycles or social media, but in Christ and His Word.

Jesus Is Lord of Your Calendar

Jesus said He is "Lord of the Sabbath," meaning He is Lord of your rhythm, time, and calendar. He's not asking for a time slot - He's asking to rewrite your whole rhythm.

For busy leaders, entrepreneurs, and problem-solvers: your skills aren't secular - they're discipleship tools. You belong to the Prince of Peace, and your gifts can help build His kingdom.

Life Application

This week, examine your calendar honestly. What story is it telling about your priorities and values? Instead of asking what's on your calendar, ask who's filling it.

Consider these questions:

  • What would change if Jesus governed your schedule rather than just fitting into it?

  • Where do you need God's reset button in your life right now?

  • How can you build rhythms of rest, forgiveness, and generosity into your weekly routine?

  • What "dead weight" or bitterness are you carrying that Jesus wants to take from you?

The Prince of Peace isn't asking for perfect schedules - He's asking for surrendered hearts. Let this Advent season be your reset moment, allowing Jesus to fill the empty spaces in your calendar with His peace.
