The Secret to Keeping What God Has Given You

Have you ever wondered why some people seem to maintain their spiritual breakthroughs while others fall back into old patterns? The answer might surprise you - it's not about holding tighter to what you've received, but about giving it away.

What Does It Mean to Fall Off the Wagon?

We've all known someone who was passionate about their faith, sobriety, or personal transformation, only to watch them drift back to old habits. Maybe it's even been you. The question isn't how to achieve breakthrough - it's how to maintain it day by day.

The challenge with any kind of spiritual or personal victory isn't achieving it, but keeping it alive in your daily life. And here's the counterintuitive truth: the only way to keep what God has given you is to give it away.

The Birth of a Life-Changing Discovery

This principle was discovered in a powerful way on June 10, 1935, when Alcoholics Anonymous was truly born. Bill W., who had been sober for months, found himself in a hotel lobby in Akron, Ohio, facing the overwhelming urge to drink. His business trip had failed, he was lonely, and everything seemed to be unraveling.

Standing in that lobby, he could see the warm glow of the bar down the hall. But instead of thinking "I need a drink," a different thought came to mind: "I need another alcoholic." Not to drink with, but to help.

The Missing Piece

Through a series of phone calls, Bill W. connected with Dr. Bob Smith, whose drinking had destroyed his medical practice and life. Dr. Bob had been reading scripture and devotionals, enjoying them immensely, but nothing stuck. When these two men met and shared their stories, they discovered the missing piece.

The spiritual approach was useless if you soaked it up like a sponge and kept it to yourself. Dr. Bob took his last drink that day, and Alcoholics Anonymous was born - not when one person got sober, but when two people began helping each other stay sober.

Why Giving It Away Works

When you focus on helping others rather than just receiving help, several things happen:

You become less self-absorbed. Your mind moves away from your own misery and unmet needs toward someone else's situation.

You experience being the hands and feet of Jesus. Bit by bit, your life starts to come alive as you participate in God's work.

You discover the paradox of generosity. Multiple studies show that generous people - those who focus on giving rather than getting - end up healthier, happier, friendlier, calmer, and even live longer than ungenerous people.

The Spiritual Truth Behind This

This isn't just psychology - it's ancient spiritual truth. Jesus said, "It's more blessed to give than to receive." He also said, "Whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for my sake will save it."

In your spiritual life, you can't keep what you don't give. If your faith only flows to you and not through you, it will eventually stall in you.

From Palm Sunday Celebration to Mission

The crowd on Palm Sunday shouted "Hosanna!" - which means "rescue us!" They wanted Jesus to save them, but they wanted rescue without surrender, freedom without transformation. When Jesus moved toward the hard teachings and the cross, many of those same voices fell silent or even turned against him.

It's one thing to celebrate Jesus in a moment of feeling good. It's another thing to follow him into mission.

You Are an Ambassador

Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 5 that if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation. But he doesn't stop there. He says God has given us the ministry of reconciliation and made us Christ's ambassadors.

You are not just someone who has been rescued. You are someone who now represents the rescuer.

An ambassador doesn't speak for themselves - they represent the heart and will of the one who sent them. They enter foreign places with a message that isn't their own. That's you, whether you're sitting with someone in pain, offering hope to a neighbor, or simply listening to your spouse or children.

Your Story Matters

Your healing has a purpose. Your transformation is not the finish line - it's the beginning of your mission. When you share your story, when you listen all the way to the end of someone's sentence, when you offer hope, you're participating in God's work in the world.

God could have been chosen anything to reach the world, but he chose people. Broken people, restored people, people with a past, people with stories. He chose you not because you're perfect, but because you're proof of what God can do.

The Dead Sea Principle

The Dead Sea is the lowest spot on the planet. All water flows to it, but there's no outlet. That's why it's dead - nothing can live there. When we only receive blessings without giving them away, we become like the Dead Sea.

But when we give away what we've received, we become like a flowing river that brings life wherever it goes.

Life Application

This week, identify one way you can give away what God has given you. Maybe it's sharing your story with someone who's struggling. Perhaps it's volunteering to help others who are facing challenges you've overcome. It could be as simple as really listening to a family member or offering hope to a friend.

Start small - one person, one conversation, one act of care. Remember, you're not alone in this. You're participating with God in your own salvation and in the lives of others.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • What has God done in my life that I've been keeping to myself?

  • Who in my life might benefit from hearing my story or receiving my help?

  • Am I more focused on what I can get from my faith or what I can give through it?

  • How can I move from being someone who was rescued to someone who represents the rescuer?

The secret to keeping what God has given you isn't holding it tighter - it's giving it away. When you do, you'll discover that generosity isn't just good for others; it's the key to keeping your own spiritual life vibrant and growing.
